An explanation of Aqua Bio Rock and its application in the marine and tropical aquarium industry.

 Preamble:

What is Aqua Bio Rock?

Aqua Bio Rock is a ceramic product.  It is designed to complement and reduce the amount of natural live rock in Aquariums.

.

What is live rock?

Live rock harvested from the oceans coral reefs and introduced into aquariums because:

It is aesthetically pleasing.  The live rock recreated the natural habitat of marine and tropical aquarium fish within an enclosed aquarium.

And most important, due to the myriad of animals, animalcules and bacteria living in and on them live rock facilitates nitrification and denytrification.

Where does Aqua Bio Rock fit in?

It does not take the place of live rock.  It is designed to be used together with a small percentage of live rock.

This mix is usually 80% Aqua Bio Rock to 20% Live Rock.

It is designed in such a way that the rock readily accepts not only coralline algae but also bacteria and microbes that inhabit natural live rock.

In this manner over a period of time a live rock reef is created with all its biological advantages.  This is achieved at a fraction of the cost of natural live rock and importantly will go a long way toward saving the worlds coral reefs.

Why a synthetic product when the natural product is available?

It was found that:

All live rock was to be imported at great cost.

Live rock adds a huge expense towards setting up an aquarium.

There is a world wide movement towards limiting the removal of coral reef rock from the ocean (coral reef forms the basis of the live rock industry).

This synthetic product has been proven to be eco-friendly which is in line with the worldwide trend to move towards more environmentally accepted products.

Resulting from the above it was felt that the time is right for the introduction of a “synthetic rock” that can substantially reduce world reliance on live rock, aqua Bio Rock is such a rock..

The rock unlike other synthetic products is pH neutral (7). Is highly porous and is very light in weight.

Coraline algae through the use of chemicals and extra lighting appears within three months.

At the same time due to its porosity animalcules and bacteria commence to inhabit the Aqua Bio Rock.

From a biological point of view, the Aqua Bio Rock over time gives the same benefits as natural live rock.

Aesthetically it looks the same as live rock.

Conclusion

The total set up cost of a marine aquarium equipped with sophisticated biological filters. Such as trickle filters, sand filters, carbon filters, UV filters and the like.

One reduces the risk of bringing possible harmful bacteria into the system through improperly cured live rock.

Last but no means least, Aqua Bio Rock reduces our dependency on a natural non-renewable source.

Aqua Bio Filtration Media

How it works?

Due to left over food, ammonia an inorganic compound, which is toxic to fishes and invertebrates, is formed.

Marine livestock passes metabolic waste. This also produces ammonia. The nitrifying bacteria Nitrosomonas and nitrobacter, which convert nitrate require an oxygen-rich environment and are therefore also referred to as aerobic bacteria.

.

Another group of bacteria, termed chemoheterotrophic (feeding on chemicals) require an oxygen-poor (anaerobic) environment to thrive. They reduce nitrates firstly to nitrite, then to nitrious oxide and finally to nitrogen gas which is lost from the system.

Owing to their very different environmental needs, thriving colonies of aerobic and anerobic bacteria are not normally found together.  However, our Aqua Bio Filtration medium: which is currently available in South Africa, allows both to prosper and function correctly.

This waste is converted biologically from aerobic to anaerobic.  The bacteria that we are interested in are approximately 0.2mm to accommodate them. Our Aqua Bio Filtration medium has three main features.

It has the largest possible surface area (8000sq/m per 1 liter) for colorization by nitrifying bacteria.

It allows for optimum oxygen exchange and its shape ensures that distritus is not easily trapped. (non clogging)

Finally the porous structure of the Aqua Bio Ceramic Filtration medium allows for osmotic diffusion of oxygen, carbon dioxide and water molecules.

The necessary gasses can penetrate the material, but the floating debris is rejected.
